Maui Alpaca Ranch, A Place Both Visitors and Locals Should Go
Have your kids ever looked an alpaca in the eye while it eats from a bowl in their hands?
At our Maui alpaca ranch, that’s how most visits start. We’re an 8-acre fiber farm in Makawao, on the slopes of Haleakalā, home to about a dozen alpacas and a group of Angora rabbits. You can book a visit to meet the herd and see how their fleece becomes the yarn on our store shelves.
This guide walks you through a visit and explains why the ranch is worth the drive for locals too.

Key Takeaways
- Our Maui alpaca ranch is an 8-acre fiber farm in Makawao, on the slopes of Haleakalā at about 2,300 feet.
- On a single visit, your kids can hand-feed our alpacas and hold an Angora bunny.
- We raise two alpaca fleece types, suri and huacaya, and sell the finished yarn in our farm store.
- Maui residents get as much out of a visit as travelers do, whether it’s a keiki outing or a spinning workshop.
- We offer four bookable activities, and every one requires a reservation.
What Happens on a Maui Alpaca Ranch?
A visit to our Maui alpaca ranch centers on time with the animals. You feed the alpacas in the pasture and pose for photos, then head to the Angora bunny village and the spinning wheel.
Your guide hands out bowls of feed, and the alpacas eat right from them. Plenty of our guests say the highlight was when they fed “the girls” their morning snack and gave them a gentle neck rub.
After the pasture, you’ll meet our Angora rabbits. Kids usually ask to hold one, and our guides show them how to do it the right way.
The last stop is the fiber. You’ll see how we turn soft fleece into yarn, and you can take a turn at the spinning wheel yourself.
Inside a Working Alpaca Farm in Upcountry Maui
Our ranch isn’t a set built for tourists. It’s a real fiber farm at about 2,300 feet in Upcountry Maui, where our herd lives and grows fleece year round.
The property started out as a healing retreat. Our owner, Janet Baldwin, bought her first three alpacas when she knew very little about them. The herd has grown to about a dozen since then.
That history still shapes the farm today. Janet came to these sensitive animals through a passion for animals and healing, and she’ll tell you they put a smile on her face whenever she’s around them. We want you to feel that too.
The Alpacas, the Angora Bunnies, and the Fiber They Produce
We raise two types of alpaca, suri and huacaya. Huacaya fleece grows in a dense, crimped coat that gives the animal its fluffy look. Suri fleece hangs in long, silky locks.
Our Angora rabbits produce fiber too. The Angora is one of the oldest domestic rabbit breeds, raised for its long, soft coat.
We process some of the fleece here on the farm and send the rest to the mainland. The finished yarn comes back to Maui, and you’ll find it in our farm store next to hats, scarves, and other alpaca goods.

Kama’aina and Maui Locals Should Visit the Alpaca Ranch Too
Our Maui alpaca ranch is as much for kama’aina as it is for visitors. If you live here, it makes a great Upcountry outing with the keiki, no plane ticket required.
When did your family last try something new in Upcountry? A morning with the herd gives your kids a new experience close to home.
Locals who love craft projects can go deeper. Our workshops teach fiber skills like spinning, a good fit for anyone who knits or wants to learn a new hand skill.
You can also find us off the farm. Check our Community Farmers Market page to see where we sell yarn and fiber goods around the island.
What Sets Maui Alpaca Farm Apart From a Typical Ranch (or a Petting Zoo)
A cattle ranch raises animals for beef, and a petting zoo puts animals on display. Our farm raises alpacas and rabbits for their fiber, and our tours follow that story from fleece to yarn.
That changes what you take home. Instead of a quick pet and a photo, you go home with a clear sense of how two fleece types differ and what it takes to make a skein of yarn.
One guest had already visited several Maui farm tours, coffee and goat farms among them. They still called ours the best tour of their trip.

Guided Farm Experiences Built Around Real Animal Connection
Alpacas are gentle but sensitive animals, so our guides lead every group. Your guide introduces the herd and shows you how to approach each animal calmly.
Kids ask a lot of questions here, and our team loves to answer them. One guest wrote that our guide took the time to answer every question from their little niece and nephew. Guests often mention our guides by name in their reviews, which tells us those conversations stick.
