Walk an Alpaca on the Slopes of Haleakala
Have you ever pictured yourself walking an alpaca across a Hawaiian mountainside? At Maui Alpaca, that picture becomes real. Our Maui alpaca trekking experience takes you onto the slopes of Haleakalā, lead rope in hand, alongside one of our alpacas.
We built this tour for people who want more than a quick photo with a farm animal. You’ll walk real trails, feed your alpaca, and stop by our Angora bunny village along the way. If you’re searching for a hands-on Maui walking tour that gets you outdoors and up close with animals you won’t find anywhere else on the island, this is it.
What Is the Maui Alpaca Trekking Experience?
The Maui alpaca trekking experience is a guided walking tour where you lead an alpaca on foot across our Upcountry farm. You’re not standing at a distance snapping pictures. You hold the lead, set the pace, and walk beside the animal as it moves across the hillside.
This sets trekking apart from our other farm activities. Where a standard farm visit keeps you closer to the pasture, trekking takes you out onto the land itself. It’s a slower, more personal way to spend time with an alpaca, and it works best for guests who want a bit of adventure with their animal encounter.
We keep our groups small on purpose. Six guests or fewer join each trek, so you get real space with your animal instead of jostling for position in a crowd.
What Happens During Your Alpaca Trekking Tour
Every alpaca trekking tour follows the same basic shape, though no two walks feel quite the same once you’re out on the trail with your animal.
You’ll meet your alpaca first, get a quick introduction to how it behaves and how to hold the lead, then head out onto the farm. Along the way, you’ll stop to feed your alpaca and take photos. Before the tour wraps up, you’ll visit our Angora bunny village, where you can meet the rabbits that share the farm with our alpaca herd. Also included is a fiber and spinning wheel demonstration.
The Walking Route on Haleakalā’s Slopes
Our farm sits at roughly 2,300 feet on the slopes of Haleakalā, and the trekking route reflects that elevation. Expect hilly ground and some uneven footing rather than a flat, paved path. That terrain is part of what makes the walk feel like an actual trek instead of a stroll around a pen.
The views match the effort. As you climb and descend with your alpaca, you get open sightlines across Upcountry Maui that you won’t see from a car window or a resort lanai.
Who Can Join the Maui Alpaca Trekking Tour
This tour is built for guests age 12 and older. Because the route covers hilly, uneven ground, participants need to be able to walk that kind of terrain comfortably for the full experience.
If you’re traveling with younger children or with someone who has trouble with uneven footing, our Maui alpaca farm visit tour offers a gentler alternative that still includes time with the alpacas. Trekking is the right pick when your group is ready for a more physical, more independent walk with the animals.
Ask yourself how your group likes to spend a morning on Maui. If the answer involves trail shoes and a bit of a workout, trekking fits. If you’d rather stay closer to level ground, one of our other tours will serve you better.
Price, Duration, and How to Book Your Alpaca Trekking Tour
The Maui alpaca trekking experience runs 1.5 hours and costs $199 per person for ages 12 and up. That price covers your guided walk, the feeding and photo time with your alpaca, and the visit to the Angora bunny village.
Because each trek is limited to six guests, spots can fill up during busy travel weeks, especially if you’re hoping to book for a specific date on your Maui trip.
Alpaca Trekking vs Other Maui Alpaca Farm Tours
Maui Alpaca offers a few different ways to spend time on our farm, and trekking is just one of them.
Our Farm Visit tour is shorter, open to all ages, and keeps you closer to the pasture rather than out on trail. It’s a solid choice for families with younger kids or guests who want a lighter introduction to the alpacas.
The Paniolo Picnic pairs alpaca feeding with a meal on the slopes of Haleakalā, along with an informative talk about the animals. It suits guests who want to slow down and combine food with their farm time.
Trekking stands apart because of the walking itself. You cover real ground, put in some physical effort, and spend a longer stretch one-on-one with your alpaca than you would on our other tours. If you want the most active, most hands-on option we offer, this is it.
Why Book Your Alpaca Trekking Experience With Maui Alpaca
We run an 8-acre farm on the slopes of Haleakalā, and we built the trekking tour around what makes this land and these animals worth experiencing up close. Small groups, real trail, and direct time with your alpaca are the core of what we offer here.
If you’re planning a Maui trip and want an activity that gets you outdoors, off the beaten path, and genuinely connected to an animal rather than just observing one, book your alpaca trekking experience with us. Reserve your spot online and come walk the slopes of Haleakalā with an alpaca by your side.
